HSBC Headquarters in London, HSBC Holdings plc is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. The HSBC international network comprises over 9,500 offices in 79 countries and territories in Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa.
The Canada Square Tower was designed and fitted out in 2003 to the original services fit out schedule with a UPS configuration of N+1. With the ever increasing Trader floors demand for additional power and resilience, the target was to eradicate any single points of failure on the critical systems and at the same time integrate an additional UPS system, upgrading the resilience to 2(N+1).
HSBC Engineering commissioned Powermode ISS who in turn adopted an innovative approach by utilising space for critical plant, in the previously ignored high level underground car park area on level B1.
Powermode ISS proceeded with their due diligence surveys to ensure that the outline schemes to facilitate these works would meet with the various planning regulations, licensing and life safety issues.
Powermode ISS were then commissioned to integrate an additional 2MW UPS system including the construction of the new mezzanine switchrooms within the underground car park with the fully operational building.
Powermode ISS, in the role of Principal Contractor commenced this turnkey project in October 2007 with completion in May 2008, with every critical milestone date achieved exactly as per the critical path schedule. With the challenge of a logistically difficult working area, the Powermode design team engineered a solution that was inclusive of a full plant replacement strategy.
The structural steelwork was designed and installed to facilitate the installation of 70 Tonnes of UPS systems, Batteries and switchgear. The mezzanine floor was designed and constructed in 12-weeks to meet the critical delivery milestones within the programme.
The M&E Services inclusive of MV upgrade works, 2MW UPS systems, 4000A LV switchgear and busbar systems, 320kW CHW cooling, air conditioning, gas suppression, Life Safety systems, EMS and BMS systems were designed and installed by the Powermode project team during a 10-week concentrated period following on from the construction phase.
The final transfer of all services to the trader floors was carried out on the ‘live’ building without any effect to the traders. This seamless transition and integration of systems was engineered and planned by the Powermode team over a 2-week period in April 2008.
This project was delivered in a professional manner, to programme and with the very minimal disruption to the clients business throughout the duration of the project
